Okay, so that title is a little misleading, I am obviously not all of Canada, but I am Canadian, and I do have something to say.
Forever, American’s have made fun of Canada, as if we are a joke in comparison to their nationalistic country. Please be aware, Canadians are patriotic. We believe in our country, but we also aren’t the type to pound on our chest while trouncing our love for it across every continent. I will not speak for all Canadians, that in itself would be rude, and we all know how polite Canadians are. However, I will speak my Canadian mind, and I hope you listen.
There is a war among you, and it is terrifying. In my lifetime I have never been this afraid of what I see occurring in your country. America the Free. In recent years it has been one terrifying occurrence after another. Your American soil overwhelmed with racism, misogyny, and plain old hate. (I am not saying we do not have issues in Canada, they just aren’t as prevalent).
However, don’t forget, it is in these times you have always been the strongest. Fighting for equality and freedom.
You have produced some of the most inspirational leaders our world has ever seen. Changing the course of history. I am fortunate to have been born after many of these historical moments. Not only changing your world but mine as a Canadian.
I am unable to imagine what it would have been like before women were granted the right to vote, or understand the fight to absolve slavery, and for that I am thankful. Alternatively, how tense your country, (our world ), must have been through those hard times. Although we have passed these monumental hostilities, it seems there is more work which needs doing.
It is in the days to come, where you will prove yourself to be the resolute country I know you are. It isn’t time to run and hide and especially not to the country you seem to love to ridicule.
Albeit, as the election results rolled in and appeared to favor Donald Trump’s Presidential win, Canada’s immigration site overwhelmed with what was assumed as Americans looking to flee their country. Hoping to join the likes of us Canadians, the butt of the American joke. Suddenly my country seemed good enough to live in, and it saddened me some Americans have not known this all along.
I love you America, but perhaps it is time you saw us for who we truly are, and not some joke of a Country.
Your country lies beneath my homeland and has changed the world, (my world), significantly. Our borders do not only connect our properties but our ways of life. We watch your t.v. channels, follow your celebrities and politicians, we even eat at your restaurants. You are big business in Canada, and around the world. You are our friends, family, and our strongest ally, we respect the super power you are.
However, we are worth more than the fear of your bad decisions as a nation. Not only do we have better beer, but we are also the epitome of character and strength. Deserving of your appreciation, more often than merely when you see your country falling into ruins. Maybe you do not realize we have ample fresh water, lumber, and oil, in which you reap the benefits, and that is okay. I still love you. I am merely asking for the same appreciation, as Canadians give you.
I love you America, you have the ability to shape my world, and my children’s world. However, I am discouraged and a little sad, you do not realize we too are an amazing country filled with inspirational people. Really, really, polite, people, that love Hockey.
I will not wrap you all in one blanket. Again, it would be rude, and uneducated of myself to believe ALL of you are for hate, and discrimination, regardless of what I have seen transpire in your country over the last year. I know many of you are for peace, love, and liberty, and I love you. I love your valor, your strength, and purpose.
However, my American friends, maybe it is time you realized Canada is good enough. Not only when you are exceedingly terrified of your countries decisions. Perhaps it is time you saw, we should not only be the plight of your jokes.
So as I watch many of you reel in the shock and despair of the distinct split between your country’s decision for President, remember this. As a Canadian, I gladly welcome any American to my country, although I do believe this is your time and you should fight for your own. We are here for you, we have always been here. I think it is time to knock off the jokes and see us for the true ally we are. Your ally, friend and obviously the ruler of Hockey.
